Hey!! Its been a long while since I last updated. Wahaha.. I kinda got lazy.

DIY PVC Light stand

As some of you may know, I have a thing for DIY…

Not too long ago, my flash mount broke due to an accident. Thought I could not use it again then I remembered that I could still use it as a slave. Weeks of thinking, I finally got the inspiration from watching a YouTube video on DIY light stands.

When you have some left over pipes, free time, and some ingenuity, I made this!

Dismantled for storage –> Assembled[not fully, height adjustable from min. 2ft - max. 6ft]

Everything here cost me less than 30bucks. I know I know, PVC stuff really light, shouldn’t trust. But hey, it gets the job done especially if its indoors. Just put some sandbags or some bag to hold it down and viola, works like a charm.

and of course, 1x broken flash mount Speedlight. LOL.. Neh just kidding ya, you can modify it a little bit to mount your flash on it. Might even use the same design for a constant light source stand for more shoots later on. You just gotta love, YouTube..

Hey guys, I went to Mid Valley today for KLPF! There wasn’t much things going on today as today is only the opening.

However do head on down and check out the things they have there! For limited time only, Octopus Neoprene Camera strap for only RM10 each. Limited Stock only.

The new Nikon D7000 and Canon 60 was also there for testing. On other note, Sony’s A55 and A33 was also there for testing. Not going to talk much about that…

The new Nikon D7000 is not out for sale yet as the official release is only during the Mid-End November. 60D is out but truth be told, the new 60D felt like a cheap camera. Horrible…

Parents were home too.. Dad decided to change his big fish tank into a marine tank! Another LEOW family project!

I’ve been looking for a new phone for quite a while now. Some of my selections were the iPhone 4, the Blackberry Curve 3G and the Blackberry Bold. Firstly, I did not write this. I stumbled upon this on the internet.. Feel that its a worth sharing especially for those photographers that complains about not getting enough exercise / tire out easily during shoots. Read and enjoy! Many thanks to the person that wrote this! I forgot his name.

This is Juza… One the most inspiring photographers out there. He handholds super primes and shoots without blur images! His hand must have been made by Manfrotto or Benro…

Just look at the size of the Sigma Bazooka lens? I’m hoping to see him handhold the Canon 1200mm Prime… XD that would be so crazy.

You’d think with toting camera bags chock full of bodies, lenses, field drives, lighting equipment, filters, tripods, monopods, and batteries would be enough to give anyone a workout who carries it all day. It is a lot of stuff to carry, and you can certainly accredit some cardio to this activity, but there’s other ways to work out as a photographer. Today, I give you:

5 Photography Exercises

1. Grab your biggest camera body and with nothing else attached, see how long you can hold it straight out in front of you unsupported. 5 minutes? 10? If you can hit ten minutes, proceed to add attachments: lenses, flashes, gobos, whatever. Repeat for right and left arms and you’ll bulk up quickly! Supposedly this will also increase your hand holding capabilities to slower shutter rates because the camera weight becomes less of a factor.

2. Take an appropriately weighted camera setup (body, lens, flash, etc.) and do arm curls with it – get a paper towel and hold it by the lens, with the camera on one side, then switch and do reverse curls. Your wrists will stay nice and strong for those long wedding shoots. 10-20 reps a day

3. Stuff as much of your gear as you can into a duffel bag or pack. Lie down on the floor and put the bag on top of your legs. Now slowly lift your legs until your feet are about 6-10″ off the floor. Leave in position for 30-45 seconds and rest. Repeat for 10-20 reps per day to keep your abs in shape after those morning lattes before each sunrise shoot! (Damn you Starbucks! )

4. Take that same bag and zip-tie it to your tripod (or conversely, attach your tripod to it with Vel-cro straps as applicable). Extend the tripod legs out and you have a weight you can raise and lower behind your back. Repeat as desired to keep your back and shoulders prepared for those 2 mile photo walks that turn into 10 mile journeys!

5. Buckle on that weighted-down backpack now and stand with your feet about shoulder width apart. Place your hands on your legs and proceed to squat down until you are almost sitting on the floor. (The “squat” part of squat-thrusts…) This is great for legs and lower back exercises.

There you have it – five tips for a photo-centric workout. As always, if you are concerned about your health, consult with a physician before starting any physical regimen. I am not a doctor nor do I claim to be one in the field. I just know what works for me in staving off the results of those many Grande White Mochas!

10 Things That are More Fun and Useful to Photographers Than Playing Farmville
Sometimes, as photographers, we tend to try to improve ourselves. However we often get that thought, wondering what is the true purpose / aim that we want to achieve with our photographs. We may look back at archives of our past photos, these photos at that time were meaningful to us and we wonder. Each time we pick up the camera to shoot, “Is it for self-satisfaction? Where should I go from here?”

I read about how some photographers are having challenging times. How there isn’t as much work coming their way as before. Whining and complaining about the “state of the industry” and a bunch of other stuff that does no good at all.
Then I see the Farmville and Mafia Wars and other time-wasting posts fly by in my Tweetdeck… many by the same photographers I just saw complaining that the business isn’t what it was…

Guys, these are the good old days for young people.
And by the way, what has getting someone ‘whacked’ or finding a pig in your garden doing for your business? Anyone? Really… send me an email with what stupid time-wasting online gaming is doing for your work, and I will post it and send a bunch of links your way.
Look, I don’t care if someone wants to play those games and still get stuff done… who cares. These comments are directed toward people who are wasting time and worrying about their business consecutively. I am not against fun, I am tired of the whining that wasting time inevitably produces.

So I have a little list of 10 things you can do to have fun and will certainly be more conducive to growing a photographic career than tending your online aquarium. Here we go.

Identify your ‘Fans’ and create ‘Evangelists’.

Do you have anyone who is a super fan, those who love your work? Make a list of them. And then figure out how you can make them true evangelists for your photography. How can we turn fans into ‘raving fans’? Find out what they like about your work. Note what you can do to make more raving fans instead of ex-clients. It is so much easier to keep a client than to get a new one.
Take 5 of your images and do a critique of them.

Do it online if you want to be really brave. And remember that a critique is not simply what is wrong, it is also what is right. Do a thorough investigation of each of the images. What makes them work? What are their flaws? What could you have done to make it better if you had to do it again. Don’t do this in your head… write it down. In the process of writing or typing it becomes more important in your mind.
Write a review of a fellow photographer.

On Flickr there are those “Testimonials” that can do something nice for another photographer. If you don’t know someone, go to a gallery and see new work. Find the photographers I occasionally link here on LE, and visit their sites. If you have some shooters that inspire you, take a few images and write a review. Why do you like the work? What makes it special to you? How does the work engage you? You may find some ideas to help your own work.
Do something silly with photography.

Shoot from the hip. Take an image every 15 minutes. Document your walk with the dog. Document the dog. Take the camera and shoot without looking through the viewfinder. Make images at night with a flashlight. Play. It’s OK to not be serious.
Send a note or email to a photographer you admire.

If there is a shooter you admire, even if they are totally famous and nearly a celebrity in themselves, send them a note and let them know. Not a “you rock, dude… cool shots and totally awesome babes” kinda thing, but a thoughtful, well written note that tells them what you like and how it has inspired you. We aren’t doing this to get a reply… just for fun. And what you may learn about yourself while writing this can be very eye-opening as well.
Pick up one of those disposable cameras at the drugstore.

And use it to make incredible, outstanding images. One shot per shoot. In other words, if you do a shot of something, pull it out and make ONE image – and make it rock. So when you get that little stack of prints, each one looks like a million bucks – or at least as good as those little disposable cameras make. (No, digital P&S cameras don’t count. No chimping. It is about the fun of getting the shots back unforseen.) Alternate: Take the camera and shoot whatever the image count is on a single outing – no DSLR taken – just this camera. Make every shot count.
Take a Workshop in a different discipline.

Find a cool writing workshop and sign up. Do a pottery workshop, or something on web design. If you have never done any kind of art, take a painting or watercolor class. Sculpting and welding could be fun. Well, the welding thing could be a little dangerous, but then so is chasing elephants with burning torches… I digress. Have fun… learn something else, and it will burn some incredible ideas into your brain.
Pull 1 or 3 images out of your portfolio and write a short story based on the content.

An image is a story… now tell it. What is going on in the picture? What was the story behind it? Not the BTS stuff, fiction. Fiction. Make up a story about what the image is about. Alternate: write a poem that the image could illustrate. Or a rap song… whatever. It is such fun to do… and can increase the ‘story telling’ ability of your next photographs.
Do a video of you shooting.

Not a behind the scenes video… focus the camera on you from where the subject is. You can see what you look like when you are shooting. That is what the model/subject sees when you are shooting. Very enlightening, and it can help you develop your shooting persona.
Reshoot the cover of your favorite CD/Album.

Take it as a self assignment. You know the music intimately, and probably a lot about the band/composer/singer who performs in it. Of course shooting the artist may not be possible (Joni… “Hejira”… I am open anytime.) Take the lyrics if available and find an ‘image’ within them to help the illustration. The energy that concentrates on the assignment can kick some creative ass…

Had a great time chilling with the family at Gohtong Jaya, Genting. Took off for dinner at some place near Gombak, on the way to Genting. Not too sure of the location but the food was great. Uzbek food if I’m not wrong. They had simple dishes too like Mushroom soup and such. Left after dinner and the weather was FANTASTIC. Cool air, relaxing time up there. Fell asleep in the living room on the couch. Oh, cousin has a place up there in Gohtong, its near the Cable Car station that leads up to Genting Highlands. Took a few shots, had my try at shooting HDR too. Pictures below. (:

Canon Powershot S95

Hey there!

Canon unveils their new camera, the Powershot S95.

For most serious photographers out there, we all know how much of a hassle it can get when carrying your SLR around, from the weight of the camera, the size of your camera gear, and of course the attention you get when you enter a "No Photography” zone. This is why most photographers opt for a 2nd option, that is to get a prosumer compact camera. One example would be the Canon G10 or the Lumix LX-3. However in comparison to a dSLR, these compact may set you back quite a bit when it comes to prices, although not as expensive compare to an actual SLR. I’ve noticed that most photographers want a compact that can do whatever their SLR can, but in a way smaller size and at a cheaper price.

The S95 uses the same 1/1.7-inch type high-sensitivity CCD sensor found in the S90. The bulk of the remaining features and design are pretty much the same. They both still have the same F/2-4.9 28-105mm-equivalent lens and poor flash placement.

It does have new Hybrid IS image stabilization. What does the Hybrid mean? Hybrid in which is has a gyroscopic IS sensor that employs both an angular sensor and an accelerometer. This enables it to suppress both the motion blur caused by the angle of the camera and the "shift blur" that often happens especially when your subject moves parallel to the camera, a problem that is more noticeable at larger zoom.

The S90 is a great camera for close-ups, so this should make the S95 an even better macro shooter.

The only significant difference between the two is the addition of 720p HD-quality recording and two mics for stereo sound.

Canon also went and implement a new HDR mode but that's not much of a reason to upgrade. (It apparently requires to be on a tripod to do so.)

The Multi-Aspect shooting is fun when it comes to creative shooting. It has the Tilt-Shift and as well as the Fish-Eye effect built in.

My opinion?

For current S90 users, stick with what you have, not much of an upgrade I must say unless you are looking forward to the Tilt Shift and FishEye.
The new HDR mode is a slight upgrade. Great for landscape photographers. But as a true photographer, I would rather shoot a landscape shot with my SLR.

If you are looking for something to shoot but do not want to carry around a big bulky SLR (I know how that feels), I would seriously consider getting the S95. Price wise, its cheaper than the G series camera and the Lumix LX series. The only downside of it is that you cannot mount a flash gun to it. If you’re the kind that shoots more with natural light, by all means get this.

I’ve seen many people complaining that they have a lousy camera, or their equipment are not up to par with commercial cameras. Watch this and think again. Do not waste your money on buying SLRs and ending up not knowing how to use it, allowing it to rot or just dumping it into your bag... Ladies especially! Please! Buying a SLR, GET A CAMERA BAG! DO NOT THROW IT INTO YOUR HANDBAG!

Wednesday (29th Sept 2010) Left for Melaka with Kimberly. Great time, took pictures. Left on Friday (1st Oct 2010).. Rest a while, had a great time with friends at Carrey’s place. (: Went home around 3am, woke up around 11am today, now at Teluk Intan, Perak. Its Ah Ma’s birthday! *yawn* so sleepy.. heh.. Didn’t shoot much on the 2nd day or 3rd day at Melaka.. The weather wasn’t on our side.

I got lazy to carry around my SLR so decided to take out my compact. Trustable Canon Powershot A1000IS. Really old and cheap camera yet so versatile. (: The camera doesn’t make the photographer people! :D

Enough said, here’s part two of the Melaka trip!

The Historical State, Melaka

Melaka… A lot has happened here in the last few centuries. But what really happened? I have no idea. Failed my history lessons at high school. Went around and learned some stuff though. Things about the Dutch and the Portuguese people that came.

Left for Melaka yesterday, afternoon round 1pm and reached here around 2.15pm. Clear roads. Having loads of fun with Kimberly. She’s still asleep now as I blog. Haha, well it is 6.30am now. Can’t sleep. Its raining now, hearing some thunder and seeing flashing lights from lightning outside the hotel room..

Staying at Fenix Inn. RM 98nett per night for walk-in. Its a little cheaper if booked online though. Around 170 for two nights if booked online, however check-in time is at 1400hrs but by the time we arrived at the hotel it was well close to 3pm. Fenix Inn seems nice, a decent 2* budget hotel. Has your standard aircond, toilet, tv. Even has wired internet. Currently online using Celcom Broadband though. Great reception here. Staying in Deluxe room B, with 2 single beds. Their TV here has satellite reception, can watch StarWorld. Had a great time at night before we went to bed. Cuddled up on a bed and watched Family Guy on my laptop, and eat muruku. Yes we went to 7-11 and bought muruku. Apparently a lot of the shops here close quite early. There is a mall near by but closed by the time it was 9, only shops open were the convenient stores and the mamak/tai chao type shops. Oh well, what a way to go eh? Coming all the way to Melaka just to watch Family Guy in the hotel room.

*Thunders / Rain pouring* =/ Rain begins to get heavier. Wonder where to go for breakfast.

So what did we do today??

Well first off was the get ourselves checked in to the hotel, then we took our cameras and off we went. Walked over to Jongker Walk, on the way there we stopped by a number of places and took pictures. Had a great “tour” from Trishaw Uncle.. lol I have no idea what his name is, but he’s a really nice uncle. Set us back only 20ringgit. He’s been at it since 1958! Still strong and still giving tour rides to people. Told us a brief history of the spots he took us. Went to see Christ Church, beside Stadhuys. Yes its the big red building in Melaka. We also stopped by at St. Paul’s Hill. We walked around and also went to look see at St. Francis Xavier Church. Beautiful places and really great for taking pictures too.

We didn’t have lunch as we didn’t feel hungry. Too distracted and having a great time I guess till we forgot to eat. Dinner time as well. All we had was some food at Station1, behind our hotel. *ZOMGWTFBBQ GO TO MELAKA EAT AT STATION1* Well we went there because we didn’t know where else to go. Everywhere else was close and we definitely didn’t want to eat fast food by the mall. Actually that was also closing already. We had dinner around 10ish~ heh.

What are we going to do today, I’m not too sure due to the weather. Jongker is only open and happening on Fridays till Sundays. Zoo Melaka or something perhaps? Not too sure. Legs a little tired still from all the walking. I had not walked this much in a long time. Doesn’t matter much though. I’m happy. Get to spend quality time with Kim and have a nice relaxing holiday.

Being a Canon user, looking at all the reviews on the new releases by Canon is really depressing. One thing is that the new 60D is a really big mistake! They were doing good until they released the 7D. Now the 60D – Plastic body? Really?

Canon has now moved into the Video DSLR phase, compromising Image Quality, AutoFocus capabilities and built! >=( The Canon 5DMkII may seem good, however the AF system is still ancient! If you were to compare, unless you are planning to do plenty of studio photography, DO NOT bother with the 5DMkII. It is better of as a Video Camera than a SLR. The 7D? Also the same thing. Better of using it as a Video Camera. With that price offering only a Crop Body, 8fps is just ridiculous! I would get a Nikon D300 with a battery grip for 2/3 the price and with atleast a 50mm F/1.8 lens with the same if not better quality… Canon oh Canon… :/

Might just jump over to Nikon.. Nikon has definitely went towards the right direction in this. The newly released D7000 and D3100 is really impressive. Not to mention the outstanding Noise Reduction High ISO performance. Sharp images as well. Nikon lenses in comparison to the Canon L Lenses are way cheaper.

I might just move on to Nikon, the D700 actually. Unless there is a better option out there. Not considering Sony or Olympus. Too commercial and overpriced lenses.

So do drop a comment on what you guys think between the 5DMkII and the D700.. Nikon VS Canon. Thanks!

Adobe Lightroom

Its amazing what one can do with a little extra time and some knowledge in Adobe Lightroom / Photoshop.

Took these shots at night after 9pm-ish~ near the park.

Played with HDR and lomo effects just using Lightroom. A great software I recommend to all photographers out there. It is really handy but it does take a little practice to make full use of it. The noise reduction in it is also really good and comes in really handy when shooting pictures at really high ISO. However it does take a little bit of “eye” to actually see how much noise to remove. Too much and picture end up coming out too soft. Too little and the noise grains are still visible. Anyway, here are the pictures.

A street level shot. Took it with the camera on the road. Made sure no cars were driving on the road at that time.

HDR at 9pm. Sky was literally black. Played around with Lightroom to get this effect.

Oh, there was some event going on at the park. Didn’t know what was happening though. Plenty of old folks from the neighbourhood and children running around. I think it was something related to the MoonCake festival. I saw lanterns lit up around the area.

I know I know! Another one again? I got tired maintaining the other one hosted on Wix… A lot of work, and its not to say really user friendly. It lags too… Well its flash heavy.. Shot using different backdrops for different colours. Only used Pop up flash for lighting(Diffused). Used a plastic sheet at the bottom to give the reflection. My try in product shoot. Not too good though. Always room for improvement! Do comment and give some tips if you know some. Thanks!
